PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and coordination of a comprehensive health program for GCISD. This includes budgetary assessment, direction and management, personnel management, and facilitation of staff development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
Bachelor of Science
Valid registered nurse license from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to organize, direct, coordinate, and evaluate health services delivery system
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of community medical health care service
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of school health and nursing administration
Experience:
Five years experience as a public school nurse
Pediatric health care experience preferred
Previous administrative and supervisory work experience
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Participate in the School Health Advisory Committee, serve as a member of the Emergency Operations Planning Team, and serve on other district committees related to health and safety issues of students and staff.
- Supervise state-mandated Fitness Testing process including training and submission of data.
- Prepare and make recommendations for budgetary adjustments for the school health services budget.
- Monitor the use, care and replacement of capital equipment arranging for timely calibrations of audiometers, battery replacement for AEDs, etc.
- Coordinate CPR and AED training for the district.
- Revise and update the school health services procedure book handbook with district policies, state and federal laws.
- Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs.
- Determine objectives and policies for school health and wellness programs in conjunction with nurses and other staff.
- Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state law, Texas Department of State Health Services rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the school health services area.
- Trains and oversees staff regarding the interpretation of school health policies regarding immunizations, communicable diseases, medication, and emergency care of ill and injured.
- Serve as a resource, support, and mentor for staff nurses.
- Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and selecting and make recommendations about placement, assignment, discipline and dismissal of school health services personnel.
- Assist principals with performance appraisals of school nurses and health aides and monitor peer review in accordance with the Board of Nursing.
- Coordinate activities of the school health program with outside agencies and members of medical and health care community to ensure that students have access to adequate health care services.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community.
- Plan and conduct staff meetings for nurses, assistants, and other school personnel.
- Provide training for substitute nurses in the health offices.
- Pursue professional development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure professional development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports and required documents for all students and submit to the Texas Department of State Health Services and Texas Education Agency.
