Job Title:        Transportation Shop Assistant                                 Wage/Hour Status:  Nonexempt

Primary Purpose:

Perform fluid checks and other routine maintenance to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Work on projects assigned. Follow established procedures.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Obtain Class B CDL with School Bus & Passenger Endorsement within 90 days of hire

DOT Drug Testing and Physical Exam

Previous automotive mechanic experience preferred

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Basic knowledge of school bus and automotive mechanical components

Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair

Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts

Ability to recognize mechanical problems while performing vehicle fluid checks

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to pass required bus driver safety training

Ability to operate a school bus

Acceptable driving record

Ability to read, understand and communicate in English

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on school buses and white fleet

 

  1. Clean and maintain fuel islands

 

  1. Check fluid levels in shop daily

 

  1. Assist Shop Mechanics complete oil changes and repair flat tires

 

  1. Assist mechanics with road calls

 

  1. Sweep area around shop

 

  1. Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance

 

  1. Work irregular hours as needed

 

  1. Sub drive or monitor as needed in a school bus

 

 

  1. Operate school buses and/or district vehicles; operate tools/equipment used in maintaining them

 

 

Other

  1. Continually upgrade skills/knowledge by study and attending training

 

  1. Communicate in a clear and friendly manner with drivers, keeping them updated on repairs to their

vehicles and on best practices

 

  1. Attend and participate in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or

            gathering information required

 

  1. Assess incidents, accidents, potential emergencies

 

  1. Perform functions of a school bus driver as a backup for routes and field trips

 

  1. Perform road checks in bad weather and report to Director

 

Safety

  1. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure safe operating condition

 

  1. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures. Use provided safety equipment at all times (respirator, eye protection, etc.)

 

  1. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform lifting, climbing, etc.

 

  1. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report to supervisor

 

  1. Handle fuel spills and other hazardous materials according to applicable laws and safety practices.

Computer, Hand tools, Power and air tools, Brake lathe, Tire balancer and mounting equipment

Shop, office, yard, vehicle environment, may require lifting of 20 to 50 lbs

Must work with a diversity of individuals

Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant stooping, kneeling,

    crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity

Temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness

Must work indoors and outdoors year-round, in and around dust, fumes and odors

Must work in noisy environments
