Student Support Specialist

Purpose:

Provide supplemental support to students and instructional staff to meet identified needs of struggling students.

 

 Experience:

 

At least five years of teaching experience.

Education / Certification:

1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferred).

2. Valid Texas teaching certificate.

3. Valid subject matter certificate.

 

Special Knowledge / Skills:

1. Expert knowledge of classroom management, effective instructional strategies and practices

2. Ability to demonstrate and develop effective practices for At Risk learners

3. Expert knowledge of the RtI process

4. Ability to support campus Title I program effectiveness and program compliance

5. Ability to coordinate between content areas

6. Ability to analyze and interpret data

7. Ability to evaluate and enhance delivery of effective instructional practices

8. Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

9. Ability to establish and maintain relationships with campus teachers and administrators

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

  • Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs
  • Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate
  • Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process

Instructional Improvement

·      Helps teachers to analyze classroom formative assessment student data and plan for effective interventions.

·      Assists classroom teachers in implementing an effective instructional program for At Risk learners.

·      Assists in the evaluation of ongoing practices and makes recommendations for change.

·      Works with special cases whose difficulty or complexity requires a high degree of professional skill and knowledge.

·      Helps teachers to diagnose student strengths and weaknesses and to match these skills with appropriate techniques, materials, and/or technology.

·      Helps teachers to implement state and district curriculum.

School/Organizational Climate

  • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning
  • Assist the principal in supporting student achievement efforts by promoting and communicating high expectations for students and staff
  • Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff

School/Organizational Improvement

  • Partner with campus administration to conduct needs assessment of campus learning and PLCs
  • Monitor and assist PLC functioning and progress
  • Leads the RtI process and lends expertise to Tier placement decisions
  • Participate in development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members
  • Help principal develop, maintain, and use information systems to maintain and records to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators
  • Assist the principal in formulating policy and procedures and in coordinating, planning, and articulating the overall educational program of the school

Student Management

  • Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with appropriate staff on follow-up and improvement efforts

School/Community Relations

  • Articulate the school’s mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission
  • Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement

·      Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with parents, students, and teachers.

·      Keeps school staff informed as to new developments in subject matter areas.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Pursue professional development activities that align with District goals and initiatives and current professional research
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators
